Immigration officials consider bid for new 'hotel-like' detention center

Stratton Oilfield Systems seeks to turn former Texas work camp into 500-bed facility with improved living conditions, which activists say would still be ‘prison’

Officials in Dimmit County, 45 miles from the Texas border with Mexico, say they’ll consider a bid on Monday from a firm who says their facility in a 27-acre former work camp for oil workers would provide dramatically better conditionsthan two other family detention centers in the state.

Those facilities have faced complaints of poor food, inadequate medical care and allegations of sexual abuse from detainees, activists and the US Civil Rights Commission.

“Our facility offers a community-based alternative that will allow children to live in a home setting, attend school, and access critical legal and social services,”Stratton Oilfield Systems said in a pitch to potential partners.

“They want to have it with no fence,” said Mike Uriegas, a commissioner in Dimmit County, who says he first met with Stratton Oilfield Systems two weeks ago. “They don’t want to appear like a prison or detention center.”

But Cristina Parker, Immigration Programs Director for Grassroots Leadership, said she and other advocates object inherently to the concept of a detention center for families fleeing violence, regardless of the purported conditions.

“If you are not free to leave, then it doesn’t matter how nice it is,” Parker said. “It’s a prison.”

The Obama administration’s use of family detention centers that hold children and mothers has become one of the most contested elements of America’s border protection program.

Advocates have called on the Obama administration to pursue alternatives for families who are waiting for courts to hear pending asylum and immigration claims.

“Our families have witnessed their loved ones killed before their eyes, they have been the victim of rapes and robberies simply because of who they are,” said Jonathan Ryan, executive director of the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services. “Our refugee families need protection, not jail.”

Earlier this month, a nearby Texas county had considered a bid with British firm Serco, which has a history of immigration detention center scandals in the UK and Australia. Jim Wells County voted not to bid on the contract, after some officials voiced concern over past abuse allegations against the firm.

Uriegas said he and other officials are undecided on the Stratton bid and will learn more at a meeting on Monday, which immigration advocates also plan to attend. One group had already heard of the company.

Last July, Stratton’s vice-president, Shannon A Stratton, tried to pitch the same idea for the closed worker housing in a letter to Grassroots Leadership, an Austin-based organization that opposes the prison industry.

A glossy proposal accompanying Stratton’s letter showed hotel-like two-bedroom studios with a living room, kitchenette and full bathroom. Stratton noted a federal judge has said women and children should be released from other detention centers where they are being held in “deplorable” conditions.

“The Studios in Carrizo Springs offers an excellent solution and is distinctly different from the facilities that are so highly criticized in the media and by human rights groups,” Stratton wrote. “Families could be free to come and go while they await immigration hearings, receive education about their rights and responsibilities, and pursue permanent relocation and employment.”

“It shows they don’t quite know what is going on,” said Cristina Parker, immigration programs director for Grassroots Leadership. “They’re confused about other things too, because it is blanketly untrue that the families will be free to come and go.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s other two family residential centers in Texas are surrounded by razor wire and high fences.

The proposal emerges just days after the US supreme court blocked Obama’s plan to spare millions of immigrants from deportation. He vowed afterward: “What was unaffected by today’s ruling, or lack of a ruling, is the enforcement priorities that we’ve put in place.”

It is unbelievable how this administration has no regard for the safety of American citizens. The traitorous GOP just lets them do whatever they want.

When OScumBag said "America can absorb another terrorist attack", do ya think that was a hint!

I have an idea GO HOME.We are tired of paying for you.

Your right about that, the problem is the sad bunch in Washington will go along with Killary Hillary as well. She openly said that she would go after church's to pay there far share in taxes and she would raise taxes to 80% and that wouldn't effect our economy one bit. She also said guns would be on her top list of things to go. America is at the very edge of the cliff, and is rolling down the hill fast. A country sold out by the very people that we Americans elected. It has taken the liberal minds over 240 years to get rid of the freedom she offered, but it's about over. Being ready for the Lords return is the next best thing we can do.

What part of illegal is not clear.   The Obumo  Adm has stolen $$$ from the VA,  SS, Medicare.... to fund their little illegal programs.   All these programs result in  billions$$$$ going into the Dems slush fund.  This same ADM sends buses, navigators,  airplanes to get these illegals.  Our border is pulled back 65 MILES.   The  Border patrol cannot stop ,  arrest for crimes, cannot ask these illegals question.    Thousands of acres have been pulled out of use for the  public... actual citizens of this country... to let the drug dealers,  terrorists, the illegals/thugs travel at their leisure.    What crap .. we must make it really nice for these illegals since they are being "detained".    If these people were stopped at the border... Mexico would start making sure that most never cross their country as they do not want them in  Mexico.    $$$$$$$$$$

Enough! Demand zero immigration. Zero! Immigration=Dispossession.

Detention centers should not be Hotels or comfort zones... they are for holding criminals until deported.  I suggest that they use Military Theater Construction standards... tin huts, showers, laundry facilities, an infirmary, and mess halls, with no air conditioning.

Segregate singles from families. Provide safe, clean but austere quarters, within Military guidelines, for basic POW detention centers.  Limit recreation and entertainment to non-electronic means... no cable, no computer, no movies... use fixed outdoor facilities of rudimentary design.  Volley ball, Tether ball, Monkey Bars, etc.  Keep it simple and austere.

Here's a novel idea...TAKE CARE OF AMERICANS FIRST! Take care of our vets! Take care of our own poor.  Rebuild our own cities.  And stop this ridiculous BS for supporting and kowtowing to illegals! They aren't American, they aren't us. So why does Washington continue to spend OUR MONEY on illegals who are more interested in siphoning from our system with the intent of taking over our southwest and "returning" the land to Mexico!

Here's an answer to this outrageous illegal imimgration:  VOTE FOR TRUMP! Trump in the WH will end illegal immigration, build  a wall, and send refugrees to a tent city far and away from the USA!  Hillary plans on opening the borders even wider, giving amnesty to all the criminals, and increasing US intake of refugees to more than 65,000!  This election is a no brainer.

Financially we can not afford the illegals.

Quit coming here illegally! Get in line. WAIT YOUR TURN. SICK OF THIS.

What is wrong with the countries these illegals and "refugees" are coming from?  How about they fix their problems at home? I keep hearing they are coming "for a better life".  I think they want the free goodies most of all but...............and this is just my opinion, if they would stop breeding like rabbits, having children they cannot support and feed, maybe they would have enough energy left to improve their own countries.  Of course, that would also take brains and courage.  These comments are about the Mexican, Central and South American's, Chinese, Indians, and other's, not the terrorists. As for the muslims, guess you can guess what I think about them coming here.

Joe Biden Vows: Give Taxpayer-Funded Obamacare To All Illegal Aliens In U.S.

Former Vice President and 2020 Democrat presidential primary candidate Joe Biden is vowing to give Obamacare, funded by American taxpayers, to all 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the United States.

During an interview with Telemundo’s Jose Diaz-Balart, Biden forgot that Obamacare technically bans illegal aliens from enrolling in healthcare plans — although illegal aliens are still able to obtain subsidized and free healthcare at Americans’ expense — and promised that under his plan, all 11 to 22 million illegal aliens would be able to get Obamacare.

The exchange went as follows:

DIAZ-BALART: When I … NBC moderated that first debate with you, I didn’t … I don’t recall a clear answer, under your plan should … would the 11, 12 million undocumented immigrants that live in the United States, that have been here many for generations, would they have access …

DIAZ-BALART: — to health insurance.

BIDEN: Yes, they … if they can buy into the system like everybody else.

DIAZ-BALART: Because you know, in [Obamacare] they can’t.

BIDEN: Yeah. Yeah, I know. Well they can, that’s my point. They continue to be able to do that.

DIAN-BALART: They cannot under the ObamaCare.

BIDEN: Well and that’s my point, they will though. They will be able to buy into … [illegal aliens] would be able to buy in, just like anyone else could.

Biden joins Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg — among other 2020 Democrats — in committing to forcing American taxpayers to pay for healthcare for illegal aliens who arrive in the U.S.

Already, due to loopholes, American taxpayers are spending nearly $20 billion every year to provide illegal aliens with subsidized healthcare, emergency room visits, and other health services.

Under the 2020 Democrats’ plan to provide taxpayer-funded healthcare to all illegal aliens living in the U.S., Americans would be billed potentially $660 billion every decade just to cover the costs. Other research has found that the plan would cost Americans at least $23 billion every year.

As Breitbart News has reported, experts have said that giving taxpayer-funded healthcare to effectively all foreign nationals who can make it to America’s borders would drive “strong incentives for people with serious health problems to enter the country or remain longer than their visas allow in order to get government-funded care.”

Despite 2020 Democrats’ continued push for taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens, American voters are overwhelmingly opposed to the plan. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey revealed that the healthcare-for-illegal-aliens plan is the least popular policy position, with opposition from 62 percent of U.S. voters.

Similarly, a CNN poll from July discovered that 63 percent of likely swing voters oppose providing healthcare to illegal aliens, along with nearly 6-in-10 of all likely U.S. voters and 61 percent of moderates. A Rasmussen Reports survey also found that likely voters, by a majority of 55 percent, oppose giving healthcare to even the most low-income illegal aliens.
