A top Senate Republican signaled Monday afternoon that while Republicans are looking for Democratic cooperation as they dismantle Obamacare, the GOP is willing to go it alone.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, said there are just three numbers that matter when it comes to repeal: 218 (a House majority), 51 (a Senate majority) and 1 (President Trump). Hatch's committee is working on a budget reconciliation bill to repeal and partially replace big parts of the Affordable Care Act.
"While I'd like to see the final product pass by larger numbers… those numbers give us a clear picture as to what kind of consensus is necessary," Hatch said. But he added that "218, 51 and 1 have to be the standard by which we judge any alternatives."
Republicans currently have the majorities in both the House and Senate to pass the reconciliation bill, and Trump has said he'd sign it. But while leadership had promised to pass a repeal bill quickly, the effort is taking longer than they originally indicated and may not finished for some weeks or months.
i don't see why not it was passed without one republican vote
Then repeal it now, dammit, NOW NOW NOW!!! This mess is the DEMOCRATS' doing, NOT OURS!!! Life will return to normal MUCH FASTER for the MOST PEOPLE if there is simply NO FEDGOV healthcare to run over everyone... INCLUDING EMPLOYERS WHO WANT TO HIRE NEW, FULL-TIME WORKERS!!!
...we've heard your bravado before, only to see it retracted and replaced with - -- 'We have to wait until after the next election to have the numbers' , which is already starting to hit the news headlines again now.
President Trump: Obamacare Repeal May Take Until 2018
republicans wanting it replaced or repaired, or just useful rhetoric for another campaign cycle are not in the least concerned with the economic or constitutional effects of federal government grabbing unconstitutional authority over our health care.
yep, me too Oren.
just more evidence in a already YUGE stack of evidence that it doesn't matter if they wear red or blue ties, politicians are predominantly lowlife snake oil peddlers. Why so many want them ruling over every aspect of life is beyond me.
they are about to rake in billions taking away peoples income taxes they aren't going to do anything until they clean out the working poor they could at least do away with the mandate fine before tax time
You bring up a very good point.
How many of the untold number of taxes buried in the Obamacare regulations are already effective for the 2016 tax year? Is it a sufficient number, with a sufficient fiscal impact to warrant the spendthrift politicians (of both parties) to delay action until after tax deadline?
I think so they could repeal the mandate today and let people keep their income tax and obamacare would end april 15 without doing anything more
setting politics aside, and focusing on healthcare...
watching those around me who have had health problems the past few years, I see a whole lot of frustration with the system. And having it compounded by the system designed to go to the next specialist in the process, and then the next, and the next, and the next, etc...
What I see most is spending a whole lot of time repeatedly going to doctors, with poor results - or nothing accomplished at all. Except for scheduling your next doctors appointment.
Why bother? it just looks like another source of anger to me. One that costs a lot of money too.
....and isn't that just exactly what we've learned to expect when fed/gov is in charge?
REPEAL - now! Screw 'replace' or 'repair', they don't address the issue.
