What was meant to be a final gathering of heroes Tuesday instead became a final victory for dozens of World War II combat vets who refused to let the government's budget battle block a visit to their memorial in the nation's capital.
With bagpipers playing "Amazing Grace," nearly 200 veterans from Mississippi and Iowa swept past barricades and security guards at the World War II Memorial in Washington in order to keep a commitment to visit the site, which was closed today due to the partial government shutdown. The veterans, in their 80s and 90s, were accompanied by Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., a former Marine who earlier vowed not to let the National Park Police keep them from a planned visit to the open-air monument.
"For some reason, I just feel like royalty," Jim Ferencak, a Navy and Air Force veteran told GulfLive.com at the event.

YUP----THE GREATEST GENERATION-----and HEY there BARRY---STICK your BULL up your ARABMUZZIE ASS!!
HAND SALUTE and SEMPER FI to ALL VETERANS but ESPECIALLY to WWII VETS---
WELL DONE !!
Barry doesn't even know what Semper Fi means. Our armed forces didn't admit Illegal Aliens. The closest he probably ever got to a military base was trying to sell weed at the entrance to Schofield Barracks.
This is exactly what one would expect from the "greatest generation." They are not cowed by tyrants, and they know what they believe in and are willing to stand up for their beliefs as they once fought for them. This is our America - thanks to them - and not Obama's playtoy. I pray that more Americans learn from their example.
The great generation continues to be brave and fight for what is theirs and yes ours. However, it is sad that today's generation has yet to prove it's self.
Jim--the GENERATION that has INHERITED the torch is OURS---IT is UP to us to reclaim our country and at the same time INSTILL PRIDE in those from the current generation---
