A little before noon on Friday, a white Homeland Security bus stopped outside a public bus terminal in downtown McAllen, its doors opening to disgorge a group of about 20 immigrants from Central and South America.
A father carried a sleeping 9-month-old with curly black hair. A mother steered two toddlers toward the terminal.
"They just left us here," said Norma Navarro, from El Salvador, as the government bus pulled away from the terminal. "We have nothing."
But each person on the bus had at least one critical possession: a packet of U.S. government-issued documents ordering them to report to immigration officials within 15 days of landing at their new destination, and to appear in immigration court on a set date.
The paperwork confers no legal status, but many immigrants see it as a pass to a new life. Edilberto Lanza Mejia, a 26-year-old from Honduras holding his infant son, described it like this: "It is a permit to enter the United States."
The flow of Central and South Americans through South Texas has become an unmanageable torrent within the past month, overwhelming the Border Patrol, and the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is charged with placing thousands of unaccompanied minors who have been arrested.
"We are being overwhelmed," said U.S. Border Patrol Agent Christopher Cabrera, vice president of National Border Patrol Council Local 3307. "We have groups of 70, 80, 90 people just walking up and turning themselves in. They're finding the first agent and saying take me in and let me have my walking papers.
"If we don't get some help soon, it's going to be disastrous," he said.
originally "test-marketed" in CA - starting in 2006 when then AG Brown and other politicians initiated... once 2008 election(s) and implementation of in 2009, now Governor Brown/Obama Admin in offices simultaneously. In front of supermarkets and other stores all across [that] state, democratic workers allowed illegal immigrants (and others) to register for upcoming [local] elections multiple times with no identification, multiple names/addresses used (personally watched this happen openly many many times) - and those registrants did vote multiple times; first it was "local school elections" as their children went to those schools, therefore, the political correctness campaigned/mouthed they should have a right to vote... Voila! No stopping the machine. Court cases attempted to stop it; judges sided illegally with politicians/special interests.
one way to change this over-run is to change the law for all welfare recipients: I understand and my heart goes out to anyone forced into accepting government help due to dire circumstances; i.e. - a parent leaves the other parent with the child[ren] with no means of support. There are dozens of other examples how this horrible fate accidentally falls on recipients. Obviously, we need to help all who have hardships with supplemental income while the get back on their feet. But the current design of our system is to keep people down/not allow them to regain independence.
Scenario: a woman with two children who has been left high and dry with no means of support by the other parent and must go on welfare. with the correct system in place, instead of our current, she could plan a future to return to a life of self-sufficient freedom - for she would be given a set amount and other social services to support herself and her two dependents while she is helped to get off the assistance. In the interim, the other parent would be held to supporting their own child(ren), not repaying the state for tracking them down/administering the support to the other parent - this becomes a vicious/expensive cycle that state governments are taking billions of dollars annually from the taxpayers to continue. Doesn't work! Stop doing the same ol same ol.
For the recipient: A journey once completed, [she/both] can be proud of and her/their two children, also proud... the American way... and becomes subsequent generations of responsibility with understanding and apathy for those others who might need help at sometime.
Instead, our government has calculated/developed a welfare program that pays more to recipients, the more children they have while on the system(!). There are 30 year old women all over this country, never married, with eight or more children... only because the "system" pays more. How do you think that would make your children feel? That they were born for profit. It's akin to social slavery. This is wrong - the whole system should be redone to make it clear: "we will help you while you regain your own independence, but as you are not able to support yourself currently with 'these two children' (or how ever many at onset of going on a govt. program), we will reduce your payment(s) if you have any further children while on government assistance. My logic to this is: if a person cannot afford to support themselves, when going on public assistance with their current circumstances at hand, how can they possibly believe having more children for whom that cannot support their current, make it easier for them/anyone/our government to help them achieve the independence/freedom our country is all about.
The other benefit of this would be: [eventually] the dollars allocated to pay for welfare programs would become more substantial and thus better services(!!) could be given to all in their time(s) of need; thus, almost ensuring they have enough "support" to return to independence/freedom. It's a win/win!
Il-legal immigrants should only be given emergency funds - to get back to their country of origin so they can migrate legally; legal immigrants should be held to the above. It would solve the problem within one fiscal year.
The system is designed wrong - it is designed for people to fail; it needs to be overhauled immediately.
Katerine: You are correct but logic and reason have nothing to do with it. It's all about votes and making as many people dependent on the government as possible. The dems believe "they won't bite the hand that feeds them" and the elite dems will still be in power, still rich and living in nice , safe places while "Rome" burns. If they stay in power, they will continue to destroy the American capitalist system and the work ethics that made us posperous and strong.
Stop the anchor baby crap and shut off the welfare faucet ! They will go back where they came from!
