Democrats are finally 'getting it': Trump’s ‘sanctuaries’ crackdown imperils transportation projects

Image result for trump sanctuary citiesA tunnel under New York's Hudson River may be imperiled. In Los Angeles, millions of dollars could be at stake for port improvements. And other communities’ hopes for major transportation projects could be caught in the crossfire as President Donald Trump threatens to strip federal funding from “sanctuary cities” that defy his immigration policies.

Considering that Boston, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., have all declared themselves sanctuaries for undocumented immigrants, Trump’s reprisals could end up canceling or delaying major infrastructure projects in some of the nation’s most congested areas — even as the administration touts a $1 trillion proposal to rebuild the United States’ roads, railroads, bridges and airports.

Trump issued an executive order last month that declares a “policy” of blocking federal funds for cities, states and other jurisdictions that refuse to provide information and assistance to federal immigration authorities. That puts potentially hundreds of millions of dollars on the chopping block, and transportation advocates say the damage could extend far beyond Trump's intended targets.

“Wouldn’t punishing a city with a loss of transit funding have deleterious effects on an entire region?” asked Steve Davis, communications director for the advocacy group Transportation for America. “D.C. for example — if the District lost transportation funding, wouldn’t Prince William or other outlying counties pay part of the price too in congestion, lost productivity and economic turmoil?”

Some sanctuary city leaders have been defiant. "We won't be intimidated by threats to our federal funding," Boston Mayor Marty Walsh wrote in an op-ed after Trump's order came out, adding: "[W]e won't place money ahead of our neighbors' safety and security." Then again, he acknowledged this month, federal money "runs the city."

Complicating the debate, the administration has yet to spell out exactly which projects or communities it plans to cut off. "There are so many questions," said Robert Puentes, CEO of the Eno Center for Transportation, a D.C. think tank.

For one thing, Puentes noted, “cities don’t get federal highway money directly” — the money flows through state governments or regional bodies known as metropolitan planning organizations. Under Trump’s order, “does it mean states or MPOs can’t spend their federal money in those cities?” he asked.

“Some cities get money for transit but what about the money that flows to transit authorities or airport authorities?” he asked. “Does it mean the Army [Corps of Engineers] wouldn’t dredge canals in southeast Louisiana because New Orleans is a sanctuary city?"

Even the U.S. Department of Transportation is trying to figure out how the executive order might affect the dollars it doles out. So are cities around the country.

Actions have consequences even for arrogant liberals

William, they haven't in the past. Look at KILLary, Slick WIlly, OWEbama, Lynch, Sharpton, Franken, Pelosi, Feinstein, Cummings, etc, etc.

There will be no sanctuary cities in libs had better come to grip with that

If you think that Trump...,will stop at "threats"..., then you haven't been paying attention.

Hey get the illegals to pay for all of that out of their supposed tax dollars.

Do you mean the ones they're "supposed to be paying" which they don't or the "ones they receive" which they do?

The solution is simple, stop being a sanctuary city and everything regarding funding moves freely. Don't and the people in your cities will rebel and throw those that promulgate such policies out of office.

Hey, let em sink.!

Go back to   Katrina..... Millions of $$$$A$ had been allocated  for the levies... etc.    But the Dem politicians used that $$$$$$$$$$$ to pad their pockets.   Nothing was fixed... so when the storm came everything crumbled.   Even tho an alert had been given 5-7 days before the storm hit.  the gov and mayor of NO  did nothing.  Planned parties.  Were rubbing their hands together  with all the $$$$$$$$ that was going to cross their palms.    Did nothing.  Then a few years ago Cory Bucker got millions for his city after  a huge storm... but he filled his trunks full of aid $$$$ and moved to the next govt   job in  DC.   Make sure all these corrupt politidians cannot take 90% of the $$$$$$ for these needed  improvements.   Once these politicians take their 90%.... nothing left for the actual work.  How about hurricane Sandy.

Correct. This has always been the DEMs modus operandi.

same thing for this oroville dam thing in california.  Jerry Brown is appropriating all our tax dollars and federal money so that wetbacks can have proper legal representation to fight ......the federal govt that provides the money to fight themselves....kinda convoluted reasoning there isn't it?

Hmm.  Boston's mayor says federal money runs the city.  In the national elections, Trump, Bush (Jr.), Bush (Sr.), and Reagan all won due to the votes and efforts of urban and suburban voters, of voters in the non-huge-city states. We won the election. The prize is ours. And the sanctuary cities are trying to tell us what WE must do with OUR money in THEIR cities? Is this like the child telling the parent what the parent must do?  Of course if you tell me what I will do with my money, I will respond negatively.

Joe Biden Vows: Give Taxpayer-Funded Obamacare To All Illegal Aliens In U.S.

Former Vice President and 2020 Democrat presidential primary candidate Joe Biden is vowing to give Obamacare, funded by American taxpayers, to all 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the United States.

During an interview with Telemundo’s Jose Diaz-Balart, Biden forgot that Obamacare technically bans illegal aliens from enrolling in healthcare plans — although illegal aliens are still able to obtain subsidized and free healthcare at Americans’ expense — and promised that under his plan, all 11 to 22 million illegal aliens would be able to get Obamacare.

The exchange went as follows:

DIAZ-BALART: When I … NBC moderated that first debate with you, I didn’t … I don’t recall a clear answer, under your plan should … would the 11, 12 million undocumented immigrants that live in the United States, that have been here many for generations, would they have access …

DIAZ-BALART: — to health insurance.

BIDEN: Yes, they … if they can buy into the system like everybody else.

DIAZ-BALART: Because you know, in [Obamacare] they can’t.

BIDEN: Yeah. Yeah, I know. Well they can, that’s my point. They continue to be able to do that.

DIAN-BALART: They cannot under the ObamaCare.

BIDEN: Well and that’s my point, they will though. They will be able to buy into … [illegal aliens] would be able to buy in, just like anyone else could.

Biden joins Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg — among other 2020 Democrats — in committing to forcing American taxpayers to pay for healthcare for illegal aliens who arrive in the U.S.

Already, due to loopholes, American taxpayers are spending nearly $20 billion every year to provide illegal aliens with subsidized healthcare, emergency room visits, and other health services.

Under the 2020 Democrats’ plan to provide taxpayer-funded healthcare to all illegal aliens living in the U.S., Americans would be billed potentially $660 billion every decade just to cover the costs. Other research has found that the plan would cost Americans at least $23 billion every year.

As Breitbart News has reported, experts have said that giving taxpayer-funded healthcare to effectively all foreign nationals who can make it to America’s borders would drive “strong incentives for people with serious health problems to enter the country or remain longer than their visas allow in order to get government-funded care.”

Despite 2020 Democrats’ continued push for taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens, American voters are overwhelmingly opposed to the plan. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey revealed that the healthcare-for-illegal-aliens plan is the least popular policy position, with opposition from 62 percent of U.S. voters.

Similarly, a CNN poll from July discovered that 63 percent of likely swing voters oppose providing healthcare to illegal aliens, along with nearly 6-in-10 of all likely U.S. voters and 61 percent of moderates. A Rasmussen Reports survey also found that likely voters, by a majority of 55 percent, oppose giving healthcare to even the most low-income illegal aliens.
