Gov. Jerry Brown asked President Donald Trump for federal funds Friday night to clean up damage a series of deadly storms cused last month that helped end California’s long drought.
Brown is asking the White House for $162 million in federal aid to contend with storms that caused flash floods, power outages, and damage to various state-funded projects.
An “atmospheric river storm system” that unleashed days of “relentless heavy precipitation” caused the damage, the California Democrat wrote in a letter to Trump.
“The impacts associated with this series of storms were substantial and widespread, devastating much of California,” the letter reads.
Brown declared a state of emergency Jan. 23 in 49 counties of California’s 58 counties. He added three more counties to that tally Friday: Amador, Mono and Riverside.
The state’s second-largest reservoir — at nearly 100 percent capacity — is on the verge of bursting its banks after officials cut down use of the Oroville Dam out of concern the structurally weak dam could rupture.
The governor’s prickly relationship with the new commander-in-chief could hamper the funds. Their disagreements stem mostly from Trump’s temporary immigration ban and from his stance on global warming. The governor vowed to maintain California’s sanctuary state status.
Thought California wanted to secede anyway? Maybe they should start figuring out NOW how to get by without federal funds.
Good thinking.. moonbean can't have it both ways .. get rid of the sanctuary cities and forget seceding .. and I am a Prunepicker that loves California, but hates the way the politicians are ruining it..
On the Trump Train, not moonbeams train to nowhere..
I agree. And make them build a wall around it to keep all the KOOKS in--that means anyone who lives there. If anyone wants into CA, I will help push them over the wall! Good riddance!
Moonbeam Brown is in a tough spot. He wants something from Trump....the question is 'what is he willing to give up to get what he wants?' He just played right into Trump's hand.
I wouldn't give the Governor a dime. Any water facilities that are Federal plus local flood control districts should receive funds directly with the proviso of private contractors working on a bid and time constraint basis (as happened when an I-10 overpass in LA went down.}
Moonbeam may need half that money to support public employees retirement perks that are hundreds of billions in arrears.
They have refused to keep water storage facilities in good repair (including Federal) - like Oroville and Lake Isabella dams that must be kept under capacity for safety reasons. The nut jobs in SF even want to tear down the Hatch Hetchy dam that supplies great water to the SF Peninsula.
The bureaucrats have been offered existing, proven technology to reduce water demand and improve crops and landscaping.
At least the non-native Delta Smelt are having a field day.
The people of California have been the Gimme Pigs of a huge societal experiment, that drastically failed, but they are still screeming Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, I need it Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. Instead of working to make California and the United States a better place to live, all they can think of is themselves, including the biggest Gimme Pig of them all, Moon Beam Brown !
How does it feel to WANT?
Give up the sanctuary cities and be a good federal citizen state, deport 1/3 of your states population back to mexico and then maybe we could talk about dropping some coin down your way. Better yet put your citizens to work cleaning up their own state for a change.
Excuse me, you want to secede, right? You want to disobey federal law, right?
California wants to do its own thing, right?
Don't make me ANGRY
